Tuning a Ukulele

The soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles are tuned to GCEA, while the baritone ukulele is tuned to DGBE. The following applies to soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles.

Tuning your ukulele before playing is a simple, but important procedure. You could tune the ukulele to a piano, a pitch pipe, or an electronic tuner. Irrespective which method you use to tune the instrument, it’s important to verify that the strings are correctly tuned relative to each other. Here are the steps for doing that:

  • First, tune the open 3rd string (C) to middle C on a piano, a pitch pipe, or to an electronic tuner.
  • Tune the open 4th string (G) to the 3rd string, 7th fret.
  • Tune the open 2nd string (E) to 3rd string, 4th fret.
  • Tune the open 1st string (A) to 2nd string, 5th fret.
